Last week students attended Beds SU’s Extraordinary General Meeting in Luton where students voted to create “Union Parliament”! Every student at Beds is automatically a Member of Beds SU, and together we represent your interests within the University and try to make positive changes to the student experience.
Union Parliament will see student reps come together monthly to debate issues and discuss topics that affect all Beds students. It will also provide a forum for you to hold your Executive Team to account and set new campaigns and issues for them to take forward on behalf of students.
With 96% of votes in favour, Members unanimously approved changes to its Bylaws – its internal rules – that also introduced measures to make the SU more inclusive and diverse. Liberation Networks were introduced, which establishes student groups for historically oppressed groups, such as disabled students, LGBT+ students and BAME students; as well as a quota implemented for our elections committee ensuring fair representation from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students in our elections oversight.
We are keen to hear from any disabled students; any Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic students; or any LGBT+ students who might be interested in helping to setup our new Liberation Networks. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org!
