 Voluntary Roles

Student Trustee x 2

Work Experience | Development Opportunities

Beds SU, the student’ union of students at the University of Bedfordshire, is also a charity and a company. As such, there is a Board of Trustees who provide strategic oversight to the company, its staff and operations.

Beds SU is looking for two students, who will remain students until summer 2022 to join its Board of Trustees.

Bedfordshire is a university, where students’ journeys resource them to make major changes to their lives, raise aspirations and open opportunities. Serving as a trustee can be an incredibly valuable way of making a contribution to wider society, not least the Bedfordshire student body.

As a Trustee you’ll gain incredible experience as the Director of a company and you’ll join Beds SU at an exciting time as we launch our new strategic plan:

You will be able to develop yourself – you’ll develop new skills and experience in management, strategic planning, decision-making, and budget/financial management.

You will build your CV – as a trustee you become a Director of a Company with a turnover of £1.5m and near 60 employees.

You will broaden your horizons – you will meet new people from a variety of backgrounds, discover new challenges and better understand how to run a charitable business that cares about students.

You can give something back to the student community – you will be able to share your knowledge and experience, helping improve how we work and engage students.

You do not need any prior experience to take on this role, but you do need to attend the four trustee meetings throughout the year, prepare them (by reading paperwork) and contribute, such as by asking questions and communicating with other trustees and staff.

The four meetings take place at these times:

  • 28 June 2021, Monday, via Zoom (5.30pm-7.30pm)
  • 14 October 2021, Thursday (10am-3.30pm, 4.30pm-6.30pm)
  • 15 December 2021, Wednesday (5.30pm-7.30pm)
  • 28 March 2022, Wednesday (5.30pm-7.30pm)

Simply complete an online application at www.bedssu.co.uk/apply no later than 9am on Friday 28 May 2021. In order to help ensure a diversity of experiences and opinions on our Board, we are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who self-define as women, of BAME ethnicities, and/or of LGBTQ+.

Trustees are asked to attend up to two further training or ‘away’ days. Trustees receive induction and you’ll be supported by other friendly, professional trustees and staff. Reasonable expenses are paid.
